Taroudant is an ancient walled city located in the Sous Valley approximately 50km East of Agadir. Taroudant was once the capital of Morocco and was the most important trading post for the spice trade and was always considered the gateway to the Sahara.
Taroudant city is almost completely inside the 6km of city walls and only recently were buildings built outside the walls. There are 9 gates to enter and leave the walled city by.
The town is an important market town and has two souks inside the walls and a weekly souk outside the walls. Taroudant is famed for its local crafts and carpets – many sellers supply to the local desert communities and specialise in travel equipment for camel trekking.
It is well worth spending a day here just walking around taking in the local sights and sounds of this vibrant city, then exploring the many alleyways and hidden shops.
