Bed Bugs

Globally, there is an alarming increase in the amount of bed bug infestations being reported. No surprise really as people travel more and go to many different places.
The thing to bear in mind is that bed bugs are hitch-hikers and will latch onto luggage, bags, clothes and even people. Bed Bugs don’t care how rich you are or how clean you are, they will hitch a lift with anybody.
There is a clear correlation to population density and deprivation and how quickly they spread, certain London Boroughs and areas in the Midlands have vast problems, however a travelling salesman is more likely to be an unwilling and unsuspecting carrier as he is staying a night here and there, allowing his passengers to drop off at new locations easily.
Bed and Breakfast establishments and hotels must be vigilant against bed bugs as this could spell commercial disaster to them, so Bed Bug monitors must be deployed and regularly checked for possible signs.
So what should you look for if you think you might have a problem?
The most obvious thing is a series of bites on legs or torso of victims. These are often very red, swollen and itchy. Obviously, go to the doctor to get some treatments to calm this, but call in a Pest Professional straight away.
Our advice is :

  • Shut door and windows to contain the area
  • Call in a Pest Controller who will inspect and diagnose the problem in that room
  • Place Bed Bug monitors in other rooms to see the extent of the problem

Unfortunately, bed bugs have developed resistance to several chemicals so it is not the sort of job you can do yourself really.
Treatments tend to be long, expensive and unpleasant, with several visits required in some cases. It involves systematic cleaning, treating and flushing of areas within the room, with all soft furnishings having to be cleaned at high temperature or steamed to kill the bugs, larvae and eggs.
